King vs. Queen Size Bed: Does Size Really Matter?

King vs. Queen Size Bed: Does Size Really Matter?

The size difference between a King and Queen bed is a mere 16 inches, but that added area means a lot when it comes to making a smart bed or mattress purchase. So, if you are looking to buy a new bed or mattress and especially if you are buying a mattress online you will want to consider the relative merits of King vs. Queen bed sizes.

The Difference Between a King vs. Queen Size Bed

Of course, the main difference between a King and Queen-size bed is the size of the mattress. What most people don’t know is that, while they differ in width, they do not differ in length.

Here are the exact dimensions:

King-size Bed Dimensions

76 inches (193 cm) wide by 80 inches (203 cm) long

Queen-size Bed Dimensions

60 inches (152 cm) wide by 80 inches (203 cm) long

These are standard sizes that are meant to be consistent across brands and bed types. Keep in mind: Due to the handcrafted nature of many quality mattresses, these dimensions may vary up to 1 to 1.5 inches.

So What Do Different Mattress Sizes Mean When Buying?

Many people assume that the bigger the bed, the better. This is not necessarily the case. Finding the right-size bed for you and your family depends on a few things...

  • Sleeping space. Naturally, a King bed will give you more sleeping space. But, for a couple, a Queen will work just as well (unless one of you is a very active sleeper). That said, many couples with young children or pets who like to snuggle with them appreciate the extra room.

  • Sleep style. Do you tend to toss and turn at night? A larger bed will give you room to do so; in fact, in a King-size bed, your partner might not even be aware of your movements. Rule of thumb, the more sleeping space, the better the sleep!

  • Space in the room. If you have a large bedroom, a King-size bed is no problem. But if your room is smaller, or has an odd configuration, a King-size bed might “take up the whole room,” leaving you with less space to move around. So take into consideration the space needed for the bed, and the space needed to walk (for example) to the door or closet. The recommended minimum room size for a standard King bed would be between 10’ x 12’ - 13’ x 13’, depending on the amount of walking room you want.

  • Moving it. Do you like to re-arrange the room periodically, just to shake things up? That will be much easier to do with a Queen-size bed. The same thing goes if you plan on moving in the near future. A King-size bed, on the other hand, makes a statement: “This thing is staying put.”

Another Consideration: Price

King-size beds almost always cost more than their Queen-size counterparts. This makes sense, as King-size beds are larger and so take more material to manufacture. Bed frames, box-springs, and linens for a king-size mattress also tend to cost more than they would for a Queen-size mattress.

That said, prices for mattresses tend to range wildly, meaning that a luxury Queen mattresses can cost a lot more than a value King mattress. Prices will vary depending on the brand, the retailer, the mattress materials used, padding, and extra features.

Some families claim that a king-size bed is worth the higher upfront cost. Again, this is a matter of personal preference.

Are There More Options than Just King vs. Queen?

Remember, the key to finding the right size is to balance the room you (and your partner) need for sleeping with the amount of non-bed space in the room. Of course, King and Queen are not your only size choices. You might also consider a Full bed, a Twin XL, or one of the “non-standard’ bed sizes above.
