Novaform memory foam itself is CertiPUR-US certified and free of formaldehyde, heavy metals, and PBDE flame retardants. The bigger story is the 2023 mold recall on ~48,000 ComfortGrande and DreamAway mattresses sold at Costco - here's what's actually risky, what isn't, and how to check your bed.
Short answer: Novaform mattresses are not chemically toxic. Every Novaform foam mattress carries CertiPUR-US certification, which independently tests foam for formaldehyde, heavy metals (mercury, lead), ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, phthalates, and high VOC emissions. None of those are present at meaningful levels.
The real safety story is a separate, narrower issue: in September 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and FXI (Novaform's manufacturer) recalled roughly 48,000 ComfortGrande 14-inch and DreamAway 8-inch mattresses sold exclusively at Costco because water exposure during manufacturing allowed mold to grow inside them. If you bought a Novaform from Costco between January and June 2023, that recall is the question to investigate - not the foam chemistry.
CertiPUR-US is a foam-industry certification run by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam. It does not certify the whole mattress - only the polyurethane foam layers. To carry the seal, foam must be made without:
Every foam layer in a Novaform mattress - the high-density support core, the air-channel transition layer, and the gel-infused memory foam comfort layer - is tested to that standard. That covers the chemicals most consumers worry about when they hear "toxic memory foam."
No. Novaform mattresses do not use fiberglass as a fire barrier. This matters because fiberglass is the single biggest "hidden toxin" issue in cheap memory foam - when a fiberglass-lined cover is unzipped or torn, microscopic fibers can escape and contaminate an entire room.
Federal law (16 CFR 1633) requires every mattress sold in the U.S. to pass an open-flame test, so manufacturers have to put something between the foam and the cover to slow fire. Budget brands often pick fiberglass because it's the cheapest option. Novaform uses an alternative fire-barrier sock made from rayon and modacrylic-style fibers instead. Still, as with any mattress: do not unzip the inner cover, and do not remove the fire sock.

On September 21, 2023, FXI Inc. announced a voluntary recall in cooperation with the CPSC. Water entered the manufacturing process at FXI's San Bernardino, California plant, allowing mold to grow inside finished mattresses. By the time the recall was issued, 541 customers had reported mold; no injuries had been confirmed, but the CPSC flagged a real risk to people with weakened immune systems, lung damage, or mold allergies.

Almost every new memory-foam mattress puts off a chemical smell when you first unbox it. That's off-gassing - trapped volatile organic compounds (VOCs) escaping the compressed foam. CertiPUR-US caps total VOC emissions at 0.5 ppm, which is well below levels associated with respiratory irritation, but it doesn't make the smell zero. Most users report it dissipates within 48 to 72 hours of airing the mattress out in a ventilated room.
If the smell is strong enough to bother you, run a fan in the room, keep a window cracked, and let the mattress breathe for a few days before adding sheets. Persistent smells past two weeks - especially musty or damp odors - are different. That's the signal to inspect for moisture or mold, not VOCs.
Most current Novaform models share the same three-layer construction:
All three layers carry CertiPUR-US certification. The cover is a polyester-blend knit with a non-fiberglass fire-resistant inner sock.
CertiPUR-US covers the chemicals that show up in toxicology studies, but a few groups should still take extra steps:
Yes. The 2023 recall has no expiration; if you own an affected model, you can still claim a refund or replacement through FXI.
Several class-action and personal-injury claims related to the 2023 mold recall have been filed against FXI. They're separate from the recall itself - the recall covers refund or replacement; lawsuits address claims of medical harm or property damage.
Novaform is the Costco-exclusive brand of FXI Inc., a U.S. polyurethane foam manufacturer. The recalled mattresses were produced at FXI's San Bernardino, California plant.
It's a strong baseline, but if you're highly sensitive, look for GREENGUARD Gold or OEKO-TEX certifications layered on top. Or step up to a natural-latex or organic cotton/wool mattress, which avoids polyurethane foam altogether.
Novaform mattresses aren't toxic in the chemical sense - the foam is CertiPUR-US certified, fiberglass-free, and meets federal flammability standards without using PBDE or Tris flame retardants. The exception is the 2023 mold recall on ComfortGrande and DreamAway models sold at Costco from January through June 2023. If your mattress fits that window, look up the model number and file a claim. Otherwise, the safety profile is in line with - and in some ways better than - most budget memory-foam brands.
