Purple Mattress Return Policy (2026): 100-Night Trial, Fees, and How Returns Actually Work

Banner Mattress Editorial·May 22, 2026·1 min read
Purple Restore Premier mattress in a bedroom setting

A plain-English breakdown of Purple's 100-night mattress trial: the mandatory 21-night break-in, what you'll pay in pickup fees, how refunds are processed, and which Purple products you can't return at all.

A mattress is a 7- to 10-year purchase, so the return policy matters almost as much as the bed itself. Purple's policy is generous on paper - 100 nights to decide - but there are a few rules that catch buyers off guard, especially the mandatory 21-night break-in and the pickup fee that comes out of your refund. Here's exactly how it works in 2026.

Affiliate disclosure: Banner Mattress is reader-supported. Some links on this page may earn us a commission, but our editorial coverage of brand policies is independent. Policy details below are summarized from Purple's official Returns & Exchanges page and Returns & Warranties support center.

The 100-Night Mattress Trial in One Paragraph

Every Purple mattress - PurpleFlex, the Purple Mattress, PurplePlus, PurpleRenew, Restore, Restore Plus, Restore Premier, and Rejuvenate - ships with a 100-calendar-day trial that starts the day your mattress is delivered. You must sleep on it for at least 21 nights before initiating a return - Purple won't accept return requests filed earlier. After night 21 and before night 100, you can call 888-848-2305 or open a request through the support portal to start the process.

What It Actually Costs to Return a Purple Mattress

Returns are not strictly free. Purple coordinates pickup through a third-party freight partner and deducts a transportation charge from your refund. The fee won't exceed standard freight rates, but in practice, customers in the contiguous U.S. report deductions in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars; Alaska and Hawaii cost more because of carrier surcharges. Confirm the exact figure with the Customer Care team before you commit - quotes vary by ZIP code.

The Pickup Process: You Don't Repackage Anything

One thing Purple does well: you don't have to box up a king-sized mattress yourself. According to Purple's official guidance, the freight team picks the mattress up as-is from the original delivery address. Returned mattresses are not resold - Purple states they are recycled or donated to charity rather than refurbished and put back into inventory.

How and When You Get Refunded

After the mattress is picked up and inspected, Purple issues the refund to your original payment method within 3-5 business days. Bank processing can extend the time you actually see the credit by another 5-10 business days. The transportation deduction is netted out of the refund - you don't pay it separately. If the mattress arrives stained, torn, or otherwise damaged, Purple may reduce or deny the refund, so keep a clean, undamaged sleep surface during the trial (a washable mattress protector is the cheapest insurance you can buy).

Exchange vs. Return - They're Not the Same

If you like Purple but picked the wrong model or size, exchange is usually the better path. Per Purple's exchange policy, you can swap to a different Purple mattress within the 100-night trial and the new mattress carries the greater of (a) the days remaining on your original trial or (b) 30 fresh days. Exchanges are limited to one per customer. Price differences are charged or refunded at the time of exchange.

What's Non-Returnable

The 100-night trial only covers mattresses. Other Purple products have shorter or no return windows:

  • Purple Pillow: 30-day return window (not 100), per Purple's returns page.
  • Mattress protectors and sheets: non-returnable once opened, due to direct skin contact.
  • Bed frames, bases, and accessories: generally non-returnable and non-refundable.
  • Custom or special-order mattresses: final sale.
  • Mattresses returned before night 21 or after night 100: outside the trial window - Purple won't process the return.

Conditions for a Successful Return

  • Within the 100-night trial window (and after the 21-night break-in).
  • Mattress is clean, stain-free, and undamaged.
  • The original law tag is still attached.
  • You have proof of purchase (order number, invoice, or confirmation email).
  • Pickup is at the original delivery address.

Buying Through Costco, Mattress Firm, or Ashley?

Purple is sold through several authorized retailers, and the return policy you get is the retailer's, not Purple's. Costco honors its own well-known generous return policy on Purple mattresses purchased through Costco.com or warehouse clubs. Mattress Firm applies its 120-night sleep trial to Purple beds purchased in store. Ashley HomeStore and other furniture retailers vary - check the receipt before you assume Purple's 100-night trial applies. If you bought direct from purple.com, the policy on this page is the one you have.

How Purple's Policy Compares to Competitors

100 nights is solid but not class-leading. Saatva offers 365 nights with a $99 return processing fee. Nectar and DreamCloud offer 365-night trials with free returns. Helix and Tempur-Pedic sit at 100 and 90 nights respectively. The trade-off: Purple's pickup logistics are smoother than the bag-it-and-ship-it experience some boxed-bed brands still expect.

Purple Mattress Return Policy FAQ

Can I return a Purple mattress after the 100-night trial?

No. Once you pass night 100, the mattress is yours. Purple's manufacturer warranty (10 years) covers defects in materials and workmanship but is not a return policy - it does not cover comfort or fit issues.

Do I need the original box to return my Purple mattress?

No. Purple's freight partner picks the mattress up as-is from your home, so you don't need to repackage it or save the original box.

What if I lost my receipt?

Purple can typically look up your order using the email address or phone number on the order. Call Customer Care at 888-848-2305 - they'll verify the purchase from their side rather than requiring a paper receipt.

Can I return my Purple mattress for a different brand?

Not directly. Purple only allows exchanges to other Purple products within the trial window. If you want to switch brands entirely, initiate a return for a refund and purchase the new brand separately.

Does Purple charge a return fee?

Purple deducts a transportation charge from your refund to cover freight pickup. The exact amount depends on your delivery address and won't exceed standard freight rates - confirm the figure with Customer Care before you start the return.

Are returned Purple mattresses resold?

No. Purple does not resell returned mattresses. According to the company, returned beds are recycled or donated to charity rather than refurbished and put back into inventory.
