How to Clean a Tempur-Pedic Pillow (Without Wrecking the Foam)

Banner Mattress Editorial·May 22, 2026·6 min read
How to Clean a Tempur-Pedic Pillow (Without Wrecking the Foam)

Tempur-Pedic says never submerge or machine-wash the pillow itself - only the cover. Here's the safe spot-clean and deodorize routine that actually preserves the foam.

Here is the part most cleaning guides get wrong: a Tempur-Pedic pillow is not washable. Tempur-Pedic's own care guidance is unambiguous - the TEMPUR material is sensitive to liquids, and submerging, machine-washing, or dry-cleaning the pillow itself can permanently break down the foam. The pillow cover is removable and washable; the foam core is not.

That single rule changes the whole routine. Below is the safe, manufacturer-aligned way to spot-clean stains, deodorize the foam, wash the cover, and keep the pillow lasting through its full warranty period.

Before you clean: read the care tag

Different Tempur-Pedic pillow lines (Cloud, Adapt, Breeze, Neck, Symphony, Comfort) all share the same core rule about not wetting the foam, but cover fabrics and care temperatures vary. Pull off the zippered cover and check its sewn-in care tag for the exact wash and dry settings - Tempur-Pedic's general guidance is cold-water machine wash with mild detergent and a cool dryer or air dry, with no chlorine bleach and no harsh stain removers.

Step 1 - Wash the cover (the only part that gets wet)

  1. Unzip the cover and slide the foam out completely. Set the foam aside on a clean, dry towel.
  2. Machine-wash the cover on a gentle cycle in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent. Skip fabric softener and bleach.
  3. Tumble-dry on the lowest heat setting or, ideally, hang to air-dry. Do not over-dry - high heat can shrink the cover so it no longer fits the foam.
  4. Make sure the cover is fully dry before reassembling. A damp cover trapped against memory foam invites mildew.

Step 2 - Spot-clean the foam (sparingly)

If a stain reached the foam itself, treat it the way you'd treat a delicate upholstery surface: as little moisture as possible, and never any pressure that wrings water through the cells.

  1. Mix a teaspoon of mild detergent into a cup of cool water. Dip a clean white cloth and wring it out until it is barely damp.
  2. Dab the stain from the outside edge inward using a lifting motion. Do not scrub or rub - that pushes liquid deeper into the foam.
  3. Follow with a second cloth dampened in plain cool water to lift detergent residue. Blot, do not wring.
  4. Press a dry towel onto the area to absorb moisture, then air-dry the pillow flat in a well-ventilated room. Avoid direct sunlight and heat - both accelerate foam breakdown and yellowing.
  5. Confirm the foam is bone-dry (often 24 hours) before sliding the cover back on.

Skip the hairdryer, heated drying rack, or radiator. The fastest safe dry is a fan blowing room-temperature air across the pillow.

Step 3 - Deodorize with baking soda

For odors without a visible stain, baking soda is the manufacturer-friendly solution. It pulls moisture and smells out of the foam without introducing any liquid.

  1. Lay the bare pillow flat on a clean surface.
  2. Sprinkle a thin, even layer of baking soda across the top. Let it sit one to two hours.
  3. Vacuum the surface using an upholstery attachment on low suction.
  4. Flip the pillow and repeat on the other side.
  5. Air the pillow out for an hour before re-covering. A short window of indirect outdoor air is fine; prolonged direct sunlight is not.

What about the vinegar trick?

You'll see vinegar-and-water sprays recommended in older guides. They can work in a very lightly misted form for surface odors, but a saturating spray runs the same risk as any other liquid: trapped moisture deep in the foam. If you use vinegar, mist (don't soak), blot immediately, and follow with the baking soda step to neutralize the smell.

Do

  • Wash and fully dry the removable cover separately on a gentle, cold cycle.
  • Spot-clean the foam with a barely-damp cloth, edge-to-center, then blot dry.
  • Deodorize with baking soda and a vacuum - no liquid required.
  • Air-dry flat with a fan; allow up to 24 hours before re-covering.
  • Use a waterproof pillow protector to keep the foam clean in the first place.

Don't

  • Submerge, soak, or machine-wash the foam pillow itself - TEMPUR material can be permanently damaged.
  • Wring, twist, or squeeze the foam to remove moisture. Pressing can tear the cell structure.
  • Use bleach, harsh stain removers, or strong solvents on the cover or the foam.
  • Dry the foam in direct sunlight, on a heater, or with a hairdryer - heat degrades and yellows it.
  • Reassemble before everything is fully dry. Trapped moisture causes mildew and odor.

How often should you actually clean it?

  • Cover: every 3 to 4 weeks, more often if you sleep with hair products or skincare oils.
  • Pillowcase on top of the cover: weekly, the same as your sheets.
  • Spot-clean foam: only when there is a visible stain. Routine cleaning isn't necessary if you keep a protector and case in place.
  • Deodorize: every 3 to 6 months, or after any prolonged storage.

Protect first, clean less

The single most useful thing you can do for a Tempur-Pedic pillow is add a waterproof pillow protector under your regular pillowcase. Sweat, drool, skincare residue, and the occasional spill stop at the protector instead of soaking into foam that can't be safely washed. A $15 protector pays for itself the first time you'd otherwise have considered tossing the pillow.

Tempur-Pedic pillow cleaning FAQ

Can I put a Tempur-Pedic pillow in the washing machine?

No. Tempur-Pedic explicitly says the pillow itself is not machine-washable - the TEMPUR memory foam is sensitive to liquids and can be permanently damaged by submersion or agitation. Only the removable cover is machine-safe, on a cold gentle cycle with mild detergent.

Can I dry-clean a Tempur-Pedic pillow?

No. Dry-cleaning solvents are not safe for TEMPUR material and can degrade the foam. Stick to spot cleaning the foam and machine-washing the cover separately.

What if I accidentally submerged my Tempur-Pedic pillow?

Press (don't wring) a stack of dry towels onto the pillow to absorb as much water as possible. Lay it flat in a well-ventilated room with a fan blowing across it for 24-48 hours. Once dry, inspect for soft spots, lumps, or odor - these indicate cell damage that won't recover, and the pillow may need replacement.

Can I use a fabric refresher spray like Febreze?

It is safer to skip aerosol fabric sprays on the foam itself; the propellants and added fragrance oils can leave residue. If you want to deodorize, baking soda plus a vacuum is the manufacturer-friendly approach. Spray fabric refreshers on the cover after it's been removed if you want.

How long do Tempur-Pedic pillows last?

Tempur-Pedic backs its pillows with a 5-year limited warranty, and most owners report comfortable use for 3 to 5 years before noticing flattening or loss of support. Using a protector, washing the cover regularly, and avoiding moisture damage will keep yours closer to the top of that range.
